Dietary fiber is the edible part of plants. By eating high fiber foods you feel fuller, eat less, with fewer absorbed calories. Diets high in fiber have many nutritional benefits:
- May reduce blood cholesterol levels and decrease the risk of heart disease.
- Helps control hunger and body weight.
- May help control blood sugar levels and decrease the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
- Decreases the risk of diverticulosis (inflammation of the intestines).
- Promotes regularity.
Calcium is essential to building strong bones. One serving of Ronzoni® Smart Taste® provides as much calcium as in an 8 oz. glass of milk or 30% of the daily requirement.
Calcium is critical for kids, especially fast growing tweens and teens because their bones are growing. In early adult years, our bodies begin losing calcium, so it’s important to replace it with calcium rich foods. This is a key to reducing the risk of osteoporosis.
The National Academy of Sciences recommends the following levels of calcium in the diet:
- Age 9-18 1,300 mg per day
- Age 19 to 50 1,000 mg per day
- Over age 51 1,200 mg per day
Vitamin D promotes calcium absorption which is essential to bone health. One serving of Ronzoni® Smart Taste® pasta provides 50% of the adequate daily intake or as much Vitamin D as in an 8 oz. glass of milk.
Vitamin D is known as the "sunshine vitamin" because the body manufactures the vitamin after being exposed to sunshine. Five to 15 minutes of sunshine 3 times weekly may be enough to produce the body's requirement of vitamin D. However, even people living in sunny climates may not make enough vitamin D and need more from food or supplements.
